Canada announces sanctions on Iran

June 23, 2010 08:31 am | Updated 08:31 am IST - Toronto

Canada is announcing a new round of economic sanctions against Iran aimed at dissuading the Tehran government from pursuing the development of nuclear weapons.

Dimitri Soudas, Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s spokesman, said today that Canada is following the United Nations’ lead.

The U.N. Security Council approved a resolution two weeks ago to strengthen sanctions and call on individual countries and blocs of nations to expand their own sanctions regimes against Iranian individuals and organisations.

The U.S. House and Senate reached a deal on new round of economic sanctions against Iran yesterday.
