Britain and Israel were on Wednesday appeared headed for a diplomatic row over the use of allegedly fake passports of several Israeli-based British citizens by the killers last month as Prime Minister Gordon Brown called for a “full investigation” and the opposition demanded that the Israeli Ambassador be summoned for explanation.
“We have to carry out a full investigation into this. The evidence has to be assembled about what actually happened, about how it happened and why. The British passport is an important part of being British and we have to make sure everything is being done to protect it,” said Mr. Brown.
Liberal Democrats’ foreign affairs spokesman Menzies Campbell said: “If the Israeli Government was party to behaviour of this kind, it would be a serious violation of trust between nations.”
Echoing his view, Hugo Swire, chairman of the Conservative Middle East Council, said the government should demand clarification from the Israeli and Dubai intelligence services.
