Attack on TV channel in Colombo

July 30, 2010 10:05 pm | Updated 10:05 pm IST - COLOMBO:

At least two reporters of a private television channel were injured in an attack by an unidentified group in Colombo, according to the local police.

The attack has attracted interest as the television channel is owned by a businessman who had backed the candidature of the former Army chief, Sarath Fonseka, during the January presidential election.

The police said the attack was carried out in the early hours of Friday leading to the destruction of main control room forcing the media group to shut down the operations for a few hours.

A witness to the attack has been reported saying the gangsters barged into the premises and allegedly exploded a petrol bomb to destroy the main control room.

The whole operation lasted not more than 15 minutes.

Within hours after the incident was reported, the government said the Inspector General of the Police had been ordered to hold a special enquiry into it.

The attack reminded a similar incident targeting two private media houses considered to be anti establishment.
