High alert on Srinagar-Jammu National highway

A high alert was sounded on Wednesday in the Jammu region after suspected militants fired on security personnel on a highway here, police officials said. Security in and around important and strategic establishments was also increased, they said.

The high alert was issued for areas along the Jammu-Srinagar national highway and the Jammu region after the incident, the officials said.

Security was increased at Katra, the base camp of the Mata Vaishno Devi cave shrine, and on all roads leading to the town, they said.

The suspected militants opened fire on the security personnel after they intercepted a truck that sped past a check point on the highway, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Jammu, Vivek Gupta, told PTI.

They fired on the personnel from the vehicle before fleeing, he said.

However, the driver and the conductor of the truck were taken into custody, the SSP said.

Gupta said an AK assault rifle and three magazines were seized from the truck during a search.

At the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Russia, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that North Korea was taking a lot of steps towards denuclearising the Korean Peninsula but Washington was not responding and was making endless demands for full disarmament instead.

Polling is under way for the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) election and will be conducted in two sessions from 8.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. for day classes and from 3.00 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. for evening classes.

The election dynamics this year has undergone a change with the AISA forming an alliance with the CYSS; giving students a third option that does not practice the brand of “money and muscle politics” synonymous with DUSU elections.

The ABVP and the NSUI are looking to bag all four posts after bagging two seats each last year. The NSUI had won the post of president and vice-president while the ABVP got the position secretary and joint secretary.

Hurricane Florence, on track to become the first Category 4 storm to make a direct hit on North Carolina in six decades, howled closer to shore on Tuesday, threatening to unleash deadly pounding surf, days of torrential rain and severe flooding.

Fierce winds and massive waves are expected to lash the coasts of North and South Carolina and Virginia even before Florence makes landfall by early Friday

Authorities took extraordinary measures to move people out of harm's way. More than 1 million residents have been ordered to evacuate from the coastline of the three states, while university campuses, schools and factories were being shuttered.
