Four more farmers in Vidarbha committed suicide on Friday on the eve of Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan’s visit to the region.
According to a press statement issued by the Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti (VJAS), a social group working among farmers in this suicide belt, four farmers killed themselves on the eve of CM’s visit.
Pundalike Uike of Salebhatti village, Deepak Wajpayee of Fulsawangi village, Atul Kute of Tirzada village and Sitaram Rodhod of Sewadas Nagar in Yavatmal district committed suicide on Friday. All these suicides were reported on the day when Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar was also in Yavatmal to attend a ‘Janata Adalat’.
“This takes the total tally of farmer suicides in Vidarbha to 536 in the current year” said the VJAS.
Failure of cash crops like soya and cotton due to excessive rains in last few days and increase in the input cost Bt cotton seeds , fertilizers and pesticides has only added fuel to the agrarian crisis in Vidarbha, according to the VJAS.
Meanwhile, CM Prithviraj Chavhan visited Vidarbha today and took the stock of flood situation in the region. He declared that inquiry would be done and help would be provided within a week to all the places in the region which suffered damage on account of heavy rains in last few day.
