A worker of Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) was electrocuted when he had climbed on to a transformer at Naganathi Odai on Wednesday.

According to Tangedco officials, the lightning arrestor on the transformer at Naganathi Odai had burst at about 9.30 p.m. Durai, a helper attached to Tangedco’s Bagayam section, went to the spot where the transformer was located. The area’s wireman from Tangedco’s Keezharasampattu section had gone to the spot.

An official said Durai had climbed up the transformer without confirming if the power supply was suspended. He was electrocuted.

The official said that what Durai carried out was an “unauthorised work”. “If authorised, the supervisor and officer would be present at the spot and the work will be carried out after taking ‘line clear’ . He did not confirm if the power supply was suspended,” he said.

The police have registered a case.
