Normalcy has slowly started returning to Yanam after two days of heavy rain due to Cyclone Phethai, which made landfall at Katrenikona near Amalapuram in Andhra Pradesh.
Around 2,000 people who have taken shelter in temporary relief camps have started returning home.
Minister for Tourism Malladi Krishna Rao, who has been overseeing relief operations, told The Hindu over phone that heavy rain accompanied by winds had disrupted power, communication network and uprooted trees. Several low-lying areas were inundated but water has receded since the rain’s intensity lessened on Monday, he added.
Power supply in coastal areas were cut on Sunday to avoid mishaps and casualties. “We have started restoring supply from Monday evening,” he said. The damage was mainly due to uprooted trees and electric posts, he added.
Around 10,000 people were given food prepared at the Central kitchen. Mr. Rao said fishermen were most affected as they have not ventured into the sea for the past week.
