Winged visitors arrive in plenty

May 14, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:51 am IST - PUDUCHERRY:

The bio-diversity rich Oussudu Lake was declared a bird sanctuary by the Puducherry government in 2008.

The lake is visited by hundreds of migratory birds, including black winged stilt, bar headed goose, painted storks, greater flamingos, open billed stork, spot billed pelican, pin tailed teals, white ibis and Eurasian spoon bill every year during the peak season.

Though it is the off-peak season, the lake has been witnessing the arrival of a large number of winged visitors. The birds have arrived due to some disturbance in their habitats. Though the water level has come down drastically, the birds are flocking the lake due to the availability of fishes and a good habitat, Deputy Conservator of Forests Sathyamoorthy said.
