Voter slips to be distributed from today

The voter slip prepared by the Election Commission will be distributed from May 7, said District Election Officer and Collector P. Jawahar.

The slips, which will have the photograph and serial number of the voter, will be distributed by Booth Level Officers (BLO) in all the assembly segments from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. till May 11. Either this slip or the voter’s identity card should be produced at the polling booth.

Talking to reporters here, Mr. Jawahar said the Booth Level Officers will visit all the households and get an acknowledgement. Households that remain closed during the day would be marked as absent, shifted or deleted.

However, the residents can still exercise their franchise with their Electors Photo Identity Card.

Those who fail to receive the voter slips would have to submit an affidavit. They have to sign on it and register their thumb impression and submit it to the presiding officer.

The administration has transferred an officer deployed in Raj Bhavan to Yanam following complaint that he campaigned in support of a political party. However, the official is yet to assume charge in Yanam and action will be taken against him. The administration has also shuffled officers in all flying squads in Puducherry region.

Special arrangements

The Election Commission has made special arrangements for differently abled persons to help them vote during the elections. As many as 160 volunteers will be engaged who will reach out to them and find out their requirements.

The volunteers will reach these locations from where they will be taken to the polling booths and returned to the same place after voting.

The volunteers will be provided with special identity cards to help the voters identify them. As many as two NSS volunteers each will be deployed in all the 407 polling stations in Puducherry region. Wheel chairs will also be provided in all these polling stations.

One vehicle will be pressed into service in each constituency to help the differently abled reach the booths.

Senior Superintendent of Police (Law and Order) N. Gnanasambandan said preventive action had been taken by the police against 785 persons in Puducherry. The police have externed 160 persons and arrested five violating the externment order. As part of confidence building measures among the voters, flag march was being conducted by police and central paramilitary forces in sensitive polling stations.
