Vigilance Awareness Week celebrations begin

Government departments, industrial units and institutions observed the launch of Vigilance Awareness Week on Monday.

At the Chief Secretariat, Chief Secretary, who is also the Chief Vigilance Officer (CVO) for the Union Territory, administered the integrity pledge to officers and staff from various departments.

Against corruption

Finance Secretary V. Candavelou administered the Tamil version to staff. This year’s theme commemorating the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallababhai Patel, the country’s first Deputy Prime Minister, is “Eradicate Corruption — Build a new India”. The celebrations will conclude on November 3.

In Neyveli, the Vigilance Awareness Week celebrations at the Neyveli Lignite Corporation of India Ltd (NLCIL) was launched by S.N. Soman, Visiting Professor, Tamil Nadu National Law University, Tiruchi, in the presence of V. Thangapandian, Director(Power), NLCIL and T. Venkatasubramanian, CVO, NLCIL. The dignitaries led the staff in taking the integrity pledge.

Accountability matters

In his address, Dr. Soman said the judiciary and vigilance play a proactive role in protecting citizens’ fundamental rights and upholding democratic vitality of the nation. The absolute and unlimited power to any high public institution or organisation without accountability is harmful to the society. It is each individual’s responsibility to uphold the highest standards of integrity and honesty and act without fear or favour, he said. Rakesh Kumar, CMD, NLCIL in a message read out in absentia, said the fight against corruption is the responsibility of the every citizen and stakeholder of the country.

At the organisation level, the effective role of vigilance is to protect from external factors and promoting efficient work culture in all its domains, the message said. Mr. Thanagapandian launched the Retirees Grievance Redressal System (RGRS), a web portal developed by computer services division of NLCIL to provide quick redress and efficient monitoring of grievances.

A Vigilance Mobile Kiosk vehicle was rolled out. Later, dignitaries, officials and people from all walks of life signed on an ‘Integrity Wall’. Over the course of the celebrations, NLCIL will host special programmes and competitions for school and college students in various towns.

Panel discussion‘Velicham’, a panel discussion for college students was held. Pondicherry University’s Vigilance Awareness Week was led by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Gurmeet Singh, Staff of BSNL, Puducherry, undertook the anti-corruption oath.

BSNL also conducted essay writing writing competitions for students of the Subramania Bharathiar Government Girls Higher-secondary school. Jayakumar Jayavelu, General Manager, BSNL, Puducherry, distributed the prizes to the winners.

Deputy General Managers S. Rajanayakam and Radhika Raveendran participated.
