On World Environment Day, political leader and BJP functionary M.A.S. Subramanian led a campaign asking people to use cycles to get across the city leaving cars and bikes behind.
Dr. Subramanian, who some time ago quit the DMK to join the BJP, on Friday flagged off a cycle rally of members of Puducherry Social Development and Anti-Corruption Organisation on Beach Road.
The organisation also put up posters with the eco-friendly message across the city that said that vehicles such as cars and bikes were made only to make life easier. But they should not be used as symbols of prestige.
Advocating cycling, Dr. Subramanian told The Hindu , “At least people in White Town should be encouraged to use cycles extensively. All government staff, affluent people and others should take vow of that they would use cycle more. In a way, users of cycles will help to save fossil fuel and to maintain pollution free environment.”
The political leader, who is also a doctor by profession, feels cycling will help residents to maintain health.
