The police on Monday arrested three persons, including two women, for duping a woman of 36 sovereigns of gold jewellery. The name of the accused was given as A. Visalatchi, her husband T. Arumugam and relative M. Angala Parameswari, all residents of East Tambaram in Chennai

According to police, the accused visited the house of complainant Anandan, a realtor in Villianur and persuaded his wife to part with her jewellery to perform rituals to alleviate their sufferings. However, they took away the jewellery.

Anandan lodged a complaint with the Villianur police. They mounted surveillance on known cheaters of Puducherry and neighbouring districts of Tamil Nadu and arrested the three accused. The arrested persons reportedly confessed to their involvement in the theft. The accused had disposed of the jewellery at various places. The police recovered ₹5.5 lakh from them.
