Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy on Wednesday said that the government had intensified steps to realise the outstanding dues to the Commercial Taxes Department.

Replying to the views on various departments expressed by legislators, he said that ₹64 crore was due to the Commercial Taxes Department. The interest on arrears had accumulated to ₹124 crore. Every effort would be made to recover the dues.

Stating that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) would come into force on July 1, he said that as per the action taken under the Revenue Recovery Act, the Government had realised ₹3.7 crore from owners of petroleum outlets. Steps would be taken to recover ₹16 crore from the defaulters, he said.

Mr. Narayanasamy called upon the government officials to ensure that files were cleared without delay to ensure effective redress of people’s problems in a time-bound manner. The files should never be delayed. He said that unless ministers and MLAs intervened, nothing could be known of the status of files.

He wanted the officials to maintain punctuality and said that senior officers should monitor their subordinate staff for attendance.

The government would be able to save ₹570 crore if there was proper spending and judicious planning in respect of the cooperative undertakings and textile mills.

‘No work no pay’

Mr. Narayanasamy said that 400 employees engaged in the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Research Institute had been drawing salary without reporting for work. This trend should change.

He warned the government employees not to meet him or any Minister during their office hours. There should be dedication to their official duties. The government had proposed to introduce biometric system of attendance in all government departments from July 1 to ensure punctuality of staff.

The government would take steps and acquire land for construction of a new Assembly complex. There was no second opinion on the issue and a new Assembly complex would be built with all facilities. The government would consult the Speaker and MLAs of all parties on the issue.

On the demand for increase in the quantum of pension for former Legislators, he said that the Speaker had convened a meeting of MLAs.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs and the Law Ministry had given their nod for the move.

The draft proposal would be placed before the Assembly and sent to the Finance Ministry for approval, he said.
