Take ‘note’ of RTO touts: protesters

Pro-Tamil activist submits application with open bribe to Transport office

July 19, 2014 11:02 am | Updated 11:02 am IST - PUDUCHERRY:

In a protest, volunteers of pro-Tamil groups kept a 100-rupee note on an application for effecting change of name in the driving licence to the Transport Commissioner to register their protest against touts thriving in transport offices.

Logu. Aiyappan, president of Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam, was given a driving licence some time ago by the Transport Department. When he renewed it recently, there was a word missing in his name imprinted in the DL book. When he went to the Transport Department with an application for name change he avoided touts and directly approached a brake inspector. The official allegedly cold-shouldered him..

On Thursday, Mr. Aiyappan along with his supporters and activists of other pro-Tamil organisations held an agitation in front of the Transport Department. They also walked into the office of Transport Commissioner S.D. Sundaresan and submitted a 100-rupee note along with application and other certificates to substantiate the claim. Mr. Aiyappan told The Hindu , “The officials here are showing respect and process the application if only the applicant comes through any tout. Otherwise, the applicant is made to run from pillar to post.”

Later, Transport Commissioner Mr. Sundaresan assured them of necessary action to eradicate the menace of middlemen.
