The Special Protection Group (SPG) has taken over the security at the helipad in Lawspet, the venue of the public meeting to be addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday.

The SPG is providing cover to Sri Aurobindo Ashram and Sri Aurobindo International Centre of Education in the White Town where Mr. Modi is scheduled to visit.

A senior police official said that a 50-member team from the SPG, headed by Sharma, a Deputy Inspector-General, held advance security liaison with senior police officers from Puducherry. The team inspected Sri Aurobindo Ashram and Sri International Centre of Education before posting its men at the venues.

According to the tentative programme, Mr. Modi, who is scheduled to inaugurate the golden jubilee of Auroville, is expected to reach the Puducherry airport by a special flight from Chennai around 10.45 a.m. He will reach Sri Aurobindo Ashram by 11 a.m.

“Mr. Modi will pay floral tributes to the samadhi of Sri Aurobindo. He will be visiting the room of the saint philosopher for meditation. The Prime Minister had heard about the manuscripts of Sri Aurobindo and he wanted to see how nicely they have been preserved,” an official of the ashram told The Hindu.

Special interaction

The Prime Minister will visit Sri Aurobindo International Centre of Education. He will see the projects made by children of the school in the age group of 9 to 20 and interact with them, he said.

The SPG team was accompanied by Deputy Inspector-Generals of Police Rajiv Ranjan, V.J. Chandran and District Collector Satyendra Singh Dursawat. The team discussed the arrangements with the district administration, officials from several central agencies and senior police officials. The SPG has lined up eight bulletproof vehicles for Mr. Modi during his visit to the city.

A three-tier security cordon has been put in place and over 1,000 policemen from the Puducherry police will be deployed in the city.

The police are keeping a close vigil on people staying in hotels and also on visitors to the ashram. Hawkers and pushcart vendors near the ashram have been asked to vacate. Presence of Coast Guard and the Navy has been stepped up along the Puducherry coast.
