Six persons killed, 1 injured as car hits stationary lorry

Occupants were on their way to Salem to attend a funeral

Six persons were killed and one person was injured in a car accident in Ulundurpet on Saturday night.

The Thirunavalur police said that Venkatesh, 58, and his family members were travelling from Chennai to Salem to attend his mother’s funeral, when their car hit a lorry parked near the Padur bus stand in Ulundurpet in Villupuram district.

Ramesh, 66, Meenakshi, 75, Suguna, 61, from Ambattur in Chennai and Venkatesh, 42, Uma, 53, and Anusha, 28, from Nanganallur and car driver Prashanth, 22, were travelling in the car. All of them, except Anusha who was seated in the rear end, were killed on the spot.

The Thirunavalur police said that they had to seek the help of fire service personnel to cut the car and remove the bodies.

No-parking zone

“The lorry was parked in a no-parking zone and there was no light. It took nearly two hours to remove the bodies and rescue Anusha. Traffic came to a standstill for nearly two hours,” the police said.

Anusha is recovering in a government hospital.
