Fear of dengue found an echo in the six-day Regional and State Level Science Exhibition-2017, which commenced on Saturday.
In an attempt to create awareness on the spread of dengue, the exhibition had a model of several Aedes aegypti mosquitoes trapped in a small net, its eggs and larvae, and posters on where the mosquitoes breed and how dengue is caused.
Higher secondary school students of government and private schools also prepared several models on waste management and sewage treatment plants showing ways to prevent the spread of the disease.
Education Minister R. Kamalakannan and Deputy Speaker V.P.Sivakolundu inaugurated the exhibition, organised by the Directorate of School Education at Navalar Nedunchezhian Government Higher Secondary School.
341 exhibits on display
Under the theme ‘Innovations for Sustainable Development’, nearly 341 science exhibits by the students of both government and private schools and 18 exhibits by the teachers were displayed.
Children from the primary, middle, high school, higher secondary school levels exhibited science models based on sub-themes on health and well-being, resource management and food security, waste management and water body conservation, transport and communication, digital and technological solutions and mathematical modelling.
Nearly 76 primary school students, 118 from the middle school, 102 from the high school and 45 higher secondary school students participated.
According to a senior officer from the Directorate of School Education the regional level science exhibition will be held till October 31 and the state level science exhibition will be held from November 3 to 4. “We have prepared a schedule for the private and government school students to visit the exhibition,” said the official.
