Students of the Pensionnat De Jeunes Filles (Government Girls French High School) along with their parents on Monday went on a flash strike protesting against poor infrastructure in the school.

It may be recalled that the government had shifted the classes of the Government Girls’ French High School functioning out of a dilapidated heritage building on Dumas Street to Simon Cardinal Lourdusamy Higher Secondary School on Mission Street due to precarious condition of the old structure.

More than 100 students along with their parents assembled before the school and blocked traffic on Mission Street. The students raised slogans against the Education department authorities for lack of basic infrastructural facilities including drinking water in the school. They also protested against the government’s decision to shift the classes to a neighbouring school.

On information police personnel rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the students. However, the students refused to budge. Senior officials of the Education Department said that the school had been shifted as per the orders of the government due to the precarious condition of the old structure. They assured the students that all basic amenities would be provided in the new school following which they withdrew their protest.
