Chief Minister inaugurates Modernised Dialysis Unit

The Puducherry Government has sanctioned Rs. 50 crore to set up a super specialty hospital in Karaikal region, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy said here on Thursday.

Inaugurating a Modernised Dialysis Unit at the Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital and Post Graduate Institute here, he said that tenders for the project would be floated shortly.

The government was committed to set up the super specialty hospital that would cater to the needs of poor patients in the outlying region of Karaikal.

The government is also planning to have a branch of Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) in Karaikal.

Mr. Rangasamy said the government had requisitioned the services of cardiac surgeon K.K. Cherian and specialists from Madras Medical Mission (MMM) to perform heart surgeries at the two Government General Hospitals and the Rajiv Gandhi Government Women and Children Hospital in the city. The government was holding talks with various hospitals in Chennai.

The modernised dialysis unit would be useful to people suffering from kidney failure who could not afford costly treatment outside in private hospitals. The unit already has four dialysis machines and eight more were added on Thursday. With the new machines the number of patients who can be provided the facility at a time will be 12. As many as 160 sessions of dialysis are performed at the GH every month.

Around 25 renal transplants have been conducted so far in the unit. V. Candavelou, Secretary to Health and K.V. Raman, Director of Health, were present.
