The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research has performed its first robotic-assisted choledochal cyst excision.

The cyst is a dilatation of the bile duct which drains bile from liver to intestine. Medical intervention for such conditions was done by an open approach, which needed a longer a hospital stay. In comparison robotic surgery needed shorter hospital stay.

The surgery was performed on a 12-year-old girl

by a team led by paediatric surgeon Bidekanand Jindal, anaesthesiologist Sandeep Mishra, Naveen and surgical gastroenterologist R. Kalayarasan.

According to L.N. Dorairajan, the officer-in-charge of Multi-disciplinary Robotic Assisted Minimal Access Surgery Unit, Jipmer is the only centre in South India where robotic surgery facilities are provided in a Government hospital.

The institution has been providing this high value service to its patients at a very subsidised cost.
