The Social Welfare Department is planning to set up residential schools for Scheduled Castes in the Union Territory.

Minister for Social Welfare M. Kandasamy told The Hindu over phone from Telangana that the government was keen to start residential schools for SCs in the U.T. Mr. Kandasamy, along with Minister for School Education R. Kamalakannan, visited a few residential schools meant for students from marginalised sections of society.

Evaluation likely

The Minister said such schools had immensely contributed to the uplift of students belonging to SCs. The residential schools offered free education and accommodation to the students up to Class 12. Officials in the Social Welfare Department said the territorial government would evaluate the performance of residential schools in other States and adopt best practices across the Union Territory.
