Reporter's Diary: Poor crowd turnout

The Kamban Kalai Arangam auditorium has a capacity of more than 500 people, and only fewer than 50 people were present

While the officials who turned up on the first day of the Theatre Festival 2014 on Saturday including Tourism Minister P. Rajavelu, District Collector S. Sundaravadivelu and Tourism Director R. Mounissamy seemed to have a good time enjoying the performances, Puducherry was left embarrassed at the poor crowd turnout on both days of the festival.

The festival was organised by the Department of Tourism and had an interesting line-up of performances. However, the department and organisers did little to promote the event, and also did not send out a press note about it.

The festival was held at the Kamban Kalai Arangam auditorium which has a capacity of more than 500 people, and it looked near empty with less than 50 people turning up. The Tourism Department, it seems, is yet to get its act together when it comes to pulling in the crowds while organising such events.

Blame game

A virtual blame game has erupted between officials of various government departments and agencies on the issue of maintenance of heritage buildings in the city. This came to light on Saturday after a team from Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras inspected the Mairie building and three schools functioning out of heritage structures to assess their structural soundness.

During the team’s visit to VOC school an official from INTACH showed the growth of vegetation on the exterior walls of the building which offended an official from the Public Works Department (PWD).

Questioning the propriety of the official raising such issues the PWD official said INTACH should have played its part to prune the vegetation as part of restoration of three classrooms. They started blaming each other even as the teams were inspecting the building.
