With an aim to make the youth environmentally-conscious, a hotel in Puducherry has been distributing pamphlets with former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s ‘Environment Oath’ to school children here.

As part of the World Environment Day celebrations on June 5, hotel Maison Perumal held an awareness programme at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Girls Higher Secondary School. Observing the United Nations Environment Programme’s theme for 2015: ‘Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care’, hotel manager Sam John spoke to children about controlling food waste. Around 450 children took the oath, and saplings was planted in the school.

A 12-member team from the hotel took out a cycle rally to promote cycling among residents.

Copies of the oath were distributed at the VOC School, and the hotel plans to distribute it to other schools, said Mr. John.

The eight-point Environment Oath was first mentioned by Mr. Kalam during his address at the launch of Paryavaran Mitra programme of the Centre for Environment Education in Pune in 2010. The oath covers topics like planting and nurturing of trees, recycling, conservation of water, use of recyclable materials, biodiversity, rainwater harvesting and environmental preservation.
