The Puducherry Municipality has warned two-wheeler rental outlets and automobile workshops not to occupy arterial roads and pavements obstructing traffic flow in the city.

If they continue to do so the Municipality would launch a crackdown and remove the vehicles and recover the cost from the owners.

In a release, R. Chandirasekaran, Commissioner of Puducherry Municipality said that two-wheeler and automobile workshops had not only encroached upon the pavements but have also occupied a major portion of road to repair vehicles.

Difficulty faced by pedestrians

Pedestrians find it difficult to use the footpaths as both sides have been encroached by automobile and two-wheeler rental workshops.

Mr. Chandirasekaran said that the municipality had been receiving complaints about two-wheeler rental outlets occupying a major portion of pavements and arterial roads in the city. Most of them do not have proper documents for renting out bikes.

Two-wheeler mechanic shops and rental outlets should voluntarily remove vehicles parked on pavements and arterial roads immediately failing which the municipality will remove them and the cost will be recovered from the owners.

The municipality will also initiate criminal proceedings against the owners.
