Crackdown on shops: Municipal workers removing an illegal kiosk on Ambour Salai in Puducherry on Thursday.

Officials of the Puducherry Municipality, accompanied by the police, removed encroachments on pavements along the Ambour Salai here on Thursday.

An official said that around 20 shops had encroached upon the pavements up to the end of the road on the stretch from Sonampalayam to S.V. Patel Salai.

Almost all shops had encroached the pavements by putting up unauthorised structures such as signboards.

The municipality had served notices on the shopkeepers asking them to remove the encroachments. But the shopkeepers did not respond to the notices.

The civic body would continue the drive and remove all encroachments, the official added.
