The Joint Action Committee of the All Puducherry Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC) Employees’ Unions on Monday staged a demonstration on the PTDC office premises to protest against the decision to allow a private player to operate a boathouse near Chunnambar.

The employees, without disturbing work in hotels and boathouses run by the PTDC, held a demonstration in front of the Managing Director chambers.

R. Gajapathy, president of Water Sports Employees Association, said they had taken a stand not to disturb work at the establishments under PRTC control, especially boathouses, during their protest. “Abstaining from work will only help the private player. So we have decided to continue with the protest without affecting normal functioning of PTDC. The employees on turn basis will participate in the protest,” he said.

Key asset

The decision to issue permit to private players would adversely impact the revenue of PTDC.

The Chunnambar boathouse is providing a good revenue of more than ₹1 crore a month to the corporation and the government. However, the government had been trying to break the monopoly and this revenue was sought to be diverted to a private player

It would open the gates for private players into many other business which was currently managed by PTDC, said another employee.
