The People’s Living Right Movement has demanded an investigation into the death of a student of a private medical college in Karaikal recently, citing medical negligence.

Plea to Lt.Governor

The organisation has sent a petition to the Lieutenant Governor. Their petition claims that Aravindh, 19, a student of the Vinayaka Missions Medical College and Hospitals, was brought to the Government General Hospital in Karaikal after a road accident on the morning of October 17. After not attending to him for an hour citing lack of required facilities, the student was sent to the Vinayaka Missions Medical College and Hospitals, where too the institute claimed it did not have the required facilities for treatment, said the petition. An ambulance had to be sent from the Thanjavur Medical College, it added. The student died by the time he was brought to Thanjavur Medical College, said the petition.

Apathy

The organisation has sought an investigation into the death owing to medical negligence, as well as on grounds of apathy and harassment meted out to students in the government hospital and the Vinayaka Missions Medical College and Hospitals. The organisation has also demanded that action be taken against the private college hospital for operating with adequate facilities, including an ambulance, and stated that it has lost credibility to run a medical college. The organisation has also asked that a team of social workers be formed to facilitate speedy treatment at the government hospital.

Last week, Leader of Opposition V. Vaithilingam had also demanded an investigation into the matter, stating it was the failure of the government which did not ensure basic emergency facilities at the institute.

He had also demanded that the student’s family be provided compensation.

Due to lack of facilities, the student who met with an accident died by the time he was brought to Thanjavur Medical College, says the petition
