Pondicherry Central University has improved its position in the newly released Times Higher Education (THE) Emerging Economies University Rankings 2018.

The University was placed in the 201- 250 category in the Times’ Asia University Ranking 2018, which was an improvement on the previous year’s ranking in the 251-300 bracket, the institution said in a press note.

The five major categories for rankings were citations, industry income, international outlook, research and teaching and Pondicherry University emerged with a score in the band of 19.9-22.4.

Pondicherry University has been participating in the Times Higher Education ranking since 2017. The ranking uses 13 rigorous performance indicators, examining each university’s strengths against all of its core missions – like teaching, research, knowledge transfer, student’s outcome, social outreach, industry linkage and international outlook, etc.

The inclusion of Pondicherry University in the THE Emerging Economies University Rankings is a significant achievement, because the University becomes one of the top 378 institutions in 42 countries included in the analysis, the press note said.

Times considered institutions from 50 countries classified as emerging economies by the Financial Times Stock Exchange (FTSE). But institutions from only 42 of these countries made to the final top 378 list.

Hence, Pondicherry University’s place in this ranking of the best research-led universities among the emerging economy nations is a significant achievement, the University reiterated.

According to the Pondicherry University, Times’ Rankings is often considered as one of the most widely observed rankings together with the Academic Ranking of World Universities and the QS World University Rankings.

IISc ranked 13th

The Indian Institute of Science topped the list of Indian Universities on the Times list ranking 13th and with an overall score of 46.5.

The 201-250 category also featured Osmania University, Jamia Millia Islamia University and the University of Kerala. Globally, Peking University and Tsinghua University in China bagged the top two spots with hardly anything to separate with overall scores of 80.5 and 80.4 respectively in the rankings.
