NMHP officials explain psychosocial aspects, preventive measures to students

An awareness programme on suicide prevention was organised by the Department of Social Work, Pondicherry University, in association with National Mental Health Programme (NMHP), Government of Puducherry, along with Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute.

The programme for college students dwelt on the psychosocial aspects of suicide and preventive measures.

It was organised in commemoration of World Suicide Prevention Day with the theme of “Working Together to Prevent Suicide” and the chosen colour was red/yellow. Students from the host department performed a mime on the theme of positive mental health.

The programme was aimed at providing students with a historical perspective of suicide and the factors which trigger it.

Balan Ponmani Stephen, Nodal officer, NMHP, explained about the role of NMHP in suicide prevention.

Effect of substance abuse

The students were provided with an overview of the influence of substance abuse, mental health, treatment modes and family therapy as an effective coping mechanism.

The different perspectives, stages of suicide and preventive steps for each were also explained.

Addressing the gathering, Gajalakshmi, psychiatrist, NMHP laid out the psychosocial aspects of suicide and some handy prevention methods.

Faculty members, students and research scholars from the Department of Social Work and from other departments participated in the programme.

R.Nalini, Head, Department of Social Work and Iftekhar Alam, assistant professor, highlighted the significance of organising such awareness programmes for the student community.
