The Police Complaints Authority on August 29 had reportedly urged the DGP to install surveillance cameras in all stations within three months.

The Federation for People’s Rights (FPR) has demanded installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at all police stations in the Union Territory as per directions of the Police Complaints Authority.

In a statement, G. Sugumaran, secretary of FPR, said the Police Complaints Authority, on August 29, had directed the Director-General of Police to install CCTVs in all police stations in the Union Territory within three months.

Urging that the Union Territory should expedite the process of installing CCTVs, Mr. Sugumaran said it was learnt that CCTV footage at the Bahour police station, where undertrial S. Jayamoorthy had been taken for interrogation, was tampered with.

Mr. Sugumaran asked the police department to immediately implement the order of the Police Complaints Authority and said that all CCTVs should be connected to the office of the Director-General of Police for monitoring.

Moreover, if interrogation was conducted before the camera, incidents of custodial death and human rights violations in stations could be prevented, Mr. Sugamaran added.
