The Federation for People’s Rights has demanded the Centre and Puducherry governments to order a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into illegal detention and assault of a postgraduate student of Department of Tamil on the Pondicherry University premises.
G. Sugumaran, secretary of the Federation for People’s Rights said that reports in a section of media revealed that the director of academic staff college S. Hariharan and officer on special duty (security and vigilance) Booshan Sudhakar and two others illegally confining the student for more than 27 hours in the university.
He claimed that the student was wrongly implicated of having barged into women’s hostel on the campus last year in April and the officials led by Mr. Hariharan forced the student to accept the charges.

Though a fact finding committee had submitted its report on the incident to the Human Resources Development Ministry three months back, no action had been taken on the report.
The Centre and Puducherry government should recommend an independent inquiry by the CBI into the incident, he said.
