The two-day joint coastal security exercise, Sagar Kavach, to assess the preparedness of the Puducherry police in the event of a terror attack, began here on Thursday.
The drill that is being carried out in various stages includes the deploying of police teams to protect high value targets, collecting intelligence on the coastline, interception of intrusions, detection of any sabotage material and interrogation of intruders.
A police officer said that teams combed the railway station, bus stand and other vital installations as part of the exercise.
Vehicle checks were also carried out at inter-State check-posts.
Tip-off
“We had a tip-off about intruders attempting to enter Puducherry but we were able to prevent them with strong surveillance,” he said.
The fisherfolk were engaged in the operation, he said adding that surveillance will be continued at vulnerable spots, entry-exit points and coastal locations until the operation is formally called off at 6 p.m. on Friday.
