A team of officials from Jawaharlal Institute of Post-graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) visited Karaikal and inspected a couple of sites proposed for the construction of new buildings for the branch of the JIPMER Hospital and college here on Friday. They inspected the government buildings where the classes could be held temporarily.
The committee’s visit follows Chief Minister N. Rangasamy’s promise during his visit last month that steps would be taken to start the branch of the college by next year.
Led by Sridhar, coordinator, they inspected the site measuring 40 acres suggested for the college near the Western Bypass and also at Polagam where a sprawling 200-acre site was available.
Atleast 100 acres
The college would need at least 100 acres for classrooms, lecture halls, administrative block, and central laboratory besides hospital.
District Collector E. Vallavan told the committee members that the college, in its initial phase till own buildings were constructed, could be temporarily accommodated at a few government buildings in different areas in the town.
Accordingly, Yatri Nivas building on the Tirunallar Road and a few other buildings constructed for the nursing college besides the coaching-cum-training centre on the Beach Road were inspected.
With several options before it, the committee is likely to select the best site suited for the college soon.
At present, an extent of 40 acres was readily available on the grounds on the Western Bypass and the district administration was prepared to acquire another 60 acres to cater to the infrastructure needs of the college, the team was told.
The team, among others, included Chandrasekar, Samath, and Rahul, architects.
V. Shanmugamsundaram, Superintendent Engineer, and Rajasekar, Executive Engineer, accompanied the team.
