November 1 is Liberation Day

Lieutenant Governor A.K. Singh has issued a notification declaring November 1 as the Puducherry Liberation Day and a public holiday.

The notification issued under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881 stated that November 1, 2014 (Saturday) would be a public holiday for all government offices/Institutions and Banking institutions including cooperative banks in all the four regions in the Union Territory of Puducherry. The notification will be published in the next issue of the official gazette.

Chief Minister N. Rangasamy announced during the Independence Day celebrations that November 1 (De Facto Merger Day) would be observed from this year as a public holiday and government would celebrate the day as Liberation Day of Puducherry.

He said the decision had been taken in keeping with the recommendations of a high-power committee constituted by the government. The committee had gone into the historical records relating to the liberation movement of Puducherry and made the recommendation which had since been implemented.
