Nine fasting Pondicherry University students shifted to Jipmer

Nine students of Pondicherry University, who commenced an indefinite fast since Thursday, were shifted to Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) after their health condition deteriorated.

On Friday, a girl student had swooned on the campus and was shifted to the health centre in the University. With the students’ hunger strike entering the third day, the condition of nine students deteriorated.

The Pondicherry University Students Movement (PUSM) which is spearheading the strike shifted the students in two ambulances to Jipmer. The students were later discharged in the evening.

PUSM said that another batch of 15 students would continue with the fast till the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) conceded the demand for removal of the Vice-Chancellor.

“We requested the authorities at the health centre to attend to the fasting students after their health deteriorated. But there was no response and the students had to arrange ambulances to shift them to Jipmer, a representative of PUSM said. Police personnel deployed at the gates also failed to extend any help.
