New policy needed to extend financial aid to poor: AIADMK

Only 17 of 415 MBBS seats filled by students from government schools. Financial Assistance scheme fails to reach the poor.

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam(AIADMK), Puducherry Unit on Wednesday said the Union Territory Government should formulate a new policy to extend financial assistance only to the poor and needy for pursuing professional courses under government quota seats.

No foresight

Addressing media persons here, AIADMK Legislature unit Deputy Leader A.Anbalagan said the ruling All India NR Congress does not have any clear thought or foresight in providing professional education to students. The wards of the economically-deprived have been put to untold sufferings under the present ruling dispensation.

He charged that the fund provided to students under the Perunthalaivar kamarajar Financial Assistance scheme has not reached the poor but instead has gone to the affluent.

Mr. Anbalagan said even though the government had 415 MBBS seats in its kitty- Centralised Admission Committee, only 17 students from government schools gained admission while the remaining seats were filled by students of the economically stronger who studied in private schools.

Seats filled by the affluent

Ninety percent of seats allotted under CENTAC were filled by economically stronger students from private school who eventually reaped the benefits under Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Financial Assistance.

Describing the proposal to extend regional reservation in the admission of professional courses as blatantly illegal, he added that in spite of several pleas made for the last three years, the government has still not come forward to scrap the reservation.

The AIADMK leader further added that the government has not spelt out its stand on the implementation of provisions of Right to Free Education Act. He also charged that the government failed to take any effort to get post graduate medical seats from the private medical colleges for the admission of students under government quota.
