‘NDA government is anti-Tamil’

Centre lacks interest in forming CMB: Thirumavalavan

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) president Thol. Thirumavalavan has said that the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance at the Centre lacked genuine interest to constitute the Cauvery Management Board (CMB).

Talking to reporters here on Monday, he said the Centre was adopting an “anti-Tamil” stand and acting in support of Karnataka keeping in mind the forthcoming elections in the State.

The VCK and other parties have decided to organise a rail roko across the State on April 5 to condemn the failure of the Centre to constitute the CMB. The Tamil Nadu government should take a bold decision to protect the rights of farmers and the State, Mr. Thirumavalavan said.

‘Support protesters’

Instead of taking action against those resorting to agitations on the Cauvery issue, the Tamil Nadu government should extend its support to those championing the cause. This would exert pressure on the Centre to constitute the Board.

The VCK leader also expressed serious concern over the recent verdict of the Supreme Court diluting the provisions of the Scheduled Castes/Tribes Prevention of Atrocities Act. He wanted the Centre to refer the case to a five-member Constitutional Bench headed by the Chief Justice of India.

Mr. Thirumavalavan also made out a strong case for electoral reforms in the country. “The present system of election is of no help as whoever gets more number of votes gets elected. This is not in keeping with the dream of B.R. Ambedkar to protect the rights of the minorities,”he said.
