A major mishap was averted at the Mudaliarpet railway gate after a glass laden lorry crashed into a height gauge located below an overhead electric line. The accident occurred at 10.20 p.m. on Wednesday.

Police said the lorry proceeding from Chennai to Kannikovil in Cuddalore district scraped the height gauge atop the railway gate.

The gauge collapsed under the impact of the collision. Had the height gauge touched the electric line the lorry crew would have got electrocuted.

Traffic along the route was regulated and officials from the Puducherry railway station rushed to the spot and fixed the gate.

A senior Railway official said the lorry was carrying glass larger than its capacity. The Railways have a prescribed standard for the height gauge for railway gates.

The increased height of the glass load led to the lorry hitting the gauge.

A complaint has been lodged with Railway Protection Force (RPF) against the driver for causing damage to railway property.
