Ramesh, a close associate of Minister for Public Works A. Namassivayam, was elected new president of Youth Congress on Monday.
In a bitterly contested election, Ramesh secured 6,709 votes out of 23,000. He hails from Villianur constituency represented by Mr. Namassivayam, who is also the chief of Pradesh Congress Committee.
Huge margin
His nearest rival Lakshmikanthan got 4,069 votes.
As per the rules of the Youth Congress election, the person who secured the second highest number of votes would become one of the four vice-presidents.
Eleven general secretaries were elected. Those elected included Vignesh, son of Social Welfare Minister M. Kandasamy and Ashok Shinde, son of Congress legislator N. Dhanavelou.
