Multi-cornered contest in Kalapet

Kalapet Assembly constituency, considered to be a powerful segment politically, is all set to witness a bitter multi-cornered contest as the party that is returned from the segment is likely to form the government in Union Territory of Puducherry.

Political observers say that Kalapet is situated in what is called Eesani Moolai (north east corner) which is a politically favourable constituency for the party which annexes it in any election.

For instance, M.O.H. Farook had headed the government after he was elected from the constituency in 1969 when Kalapet was part of Lawspet constituency.

Carved out of Lawspet following delimitation in the 2011 elections, the AINRC bagged the constituency and the party formed the government which is taken to be a confirmation of the impact of the segment politically.

Veteran politician P. Kannan had contested from the constituency in the 1991 elections and the Congress formed the government.

Presently, M.O.H. F. Shahjahan is fielded in the constituency as a Congress candidate. He is pitted against Kasilingam of the AIADMK, sitting MLA P.M.L. Kalyanasundaram who is contesting as an Independent since he had been denied a seat and AINRC candidate Viswanathan.

In the 2011 Assembly elections, Kalyanasundaram won the seat defeating sitting Minister and Congress candidate M.O.H.F Shahjahan.

Presently the ruling AINRC faces an uphill task in retaining the seat as Mr. Kalyanasundaram could make a dent on the party’s prospects. In all probability, the Kalapet constituency would witness a fight between Mr. Kalyanasundaram and Mr. Shahjahan.

Mr. Kalyanasundaram himself has an acid test to retain foothold in home turf and also the seat. The Congress is keen to wrest the seat and is trying to woo voters.

Mr. Kalyanasundaram, however, is confident of his victory based on various development works undertaken by him.

“Funds sanctioned under the MLA Local Area Development Fund were utilised for creation of infrastructural facilities in the constituency. The process of progress and development in the constituency will be further accelerated if I am elected,” said Mr. Kalyanasundaram.

‘Nil development’

“There is nil development in the constituency in the last five years. Most of the areas in the constituency are facing an acute water scarcity coupled with frequent power cuts. I have proposed an IT corridor in Kalapet and if elected I will work for its implementation. Kalapet will be developed as an Information Technology hub thanks to large number of educational institutions,” Congress candidate M.O.H.F. Shahjahan said. “I will provide free soft skills training to the educated so that they could be placed in MNCs. Infrastructure will also be created for developing village tourism,” he added.

A multi-cornered contest will eat into the vote bank and there will not be any wider difference from the point of number of votes the winning candidates will garner in this election.
