Member of Parliament R. Radhakrishnan on Monday reviewed with various departments the progress made in the Village development plan (VDP) for developing Karayamputhur as a model village under Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY).

“We had already identified some of the key developments to be launched in the village and fixed timelines. Some progress has indeed been made on most fronts though it could be a long-drawn process. Agricultural soil reclamation work, for instance, is in progress and a couple of tenders for important works had been floated,” Mr. Radhakrishnan told The Hindu .

A team of officials has already visited the village and obtained views of the villagers on their most pressing needs. “We plan to permanently locate a training and skill development centre of the Labour Department in the village. Some basic vocational courses have been identified,” Mr. Radhakrishnan said.

The centre would be operated in collaboration with Government agencies and Indian Bank.

The Lok Sabha MP had adopted the predominantly agrarian village under SAGY in November 2014.

Located about 40 kms from Puducherry, the village has a population of 4,518, with the Scheduled Caste population being 1,191.
