A modern bus terminal will be constructed in Puducherry at a cost of around ₹300 crore under the Smart City project, Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy said here on Sunday.
Talking to reporters after participating in a ‘Swachhta hi seva’ campaign held across the country to mark the third anniversary of the Union government’s initiative, he said a modern bus station with the facility for commuters to stay overnight would be constructed under the Smart City project.
Mr. Narayanasamy, along with R. Siva, who represents the Orleanpet constituency, participated in the Clean India campaign at the New Bus Stand.
He said a new bus stand had become necessary because of traffic congestion in the existing facility with a steep increase in passenger traffic and the number of buses.
At present, more than 1,500 buses operated from the New Bus Stand, Mr. Narayanasamy added.
There had been a growing demand for starting new bus services, including mini-buses, to rural and coastal areas of the town.
The Smart City project would address transportation, drinking water and sanitation needs of the town and sub-urban areas.
Around ₹1,800 crore would be spent for various infrastructure projects under the Smart City project, Mr. Narayanasamy said.
The Chief Minister also inaugurated a renovated public toilet at the bus stand.
