MLA alleges misuse of power by PPA

May 06, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:49 am IST - PUDUCHERRY:

All India NR Congress MLA P.M.L. Kalyanasundaram on Tuesday created a flutter in the Assembly by alleging that the Puducherry Planning Authority (PPA) was riding roughshod over norms and extracting money from builders and owners in the garb of inspecting multistorey buildings in the city for violations.

Participating in the general discussion on the budget, Mr. Kalyanasundaram said that a multistorey building in the city developed cracks. However, the PPA had come out with a general approach to inspect all high rise and multistorey buildings in the city for violations and deviations from the original plan.

He alleged that a section of officials of the PPA and the Chairman were extracting money from builders and owners by making visits to a number of buildings that were constructed several years ago.

It was shocking that a team of officials had also visited a building owned by a close relative of the Speaker V. Sabapathy.

The government should rein in the PPA and ensure that they did not harass the builders or owners in the name of inspecting buildings for violation of rules and regulations.
