The Governor of Meghalaya, V. Shanmuganathan, was felicitated by people from different walks of life here on Sunday.

This was Mr. Shanmuganthan’s first visit to the city after being sworn in as the Governor in May.

Thanjavur-born Mr.Shanmuganathan joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1962 and subsequently the Bharatiya Janata Party and served in many party positions. He is the author of three books on culture and society.

He was at one point a resident of Puducherry and worked for the RSS in areas such as Puducherry, Villianur and Bahour. The felicitation was hosted by members of the Puducherry Panpattu Peravai.

Mailam Bommapura Adheenam Sivagna Balaya Swami, JIPMER Director Subash Chandra Parija and film director Gangai Amaren greeted Mr. Shanmuganathan and recalled his contributions. V. Muthu of the Puducherry Tamil Sangam and Traders’ Federation President M. Sivasankar were also present.

In his speech, Mr. Shanmuganathan recalled his association with Puducherry and how he was inspired by the writings of Sri Aurobindo, Subramania Bharathi, Ramalinga Swamigal and Bharathidasan.

His aim in life was “to bring unity and amity among the citizens of the country”, he said.
