Man gets life term for setting wife ablaze

A Mahila Court in Cuddalore convicted and sentenced a 40-year-old man to life imprisonment for murdering his wife by pouring petrol on her and setting her ablaze.

Mahila Court judge S. Mahalakshmi sentenced the accused Thomas of Orayur to life imprisonment and slapped a fine of ₹5,000.

According to Special Public Prosecutor K. Selvipriya, Thomas used to quarrel with his wife Vijayakumari, suspecting her fidelity.

On April 2, 2018, he poured petrol on Vijayakumari while she was staying in her maternal house and set her ablaze. Vijayakumari was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Villupuram and referred to Kilpauk Government General Hospital where she died on April 8, 2018.

In her dying declaration to a magistrate, Vijayakumari said that her husband had set her ablaze. The couple have two children. The case came up for trial in the Mahila Court on Wednesday. Based on her confession and other evidence, the judge convicted Thomas and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
