A 32-year-old man was charred to death after his car caught fire at Iyyanarkoil Street near Mudaliarpert on Tuesday.

Police identified the victim as E. Muthukamaran, a resident of the same street, who ran a travel agency.

He had parked the vehicle near his house after returning from a trip late on Monday.

Quoting eyewitnesses, the police said on Tuesday, he went to a nearby temple after switching the airconditioner on.

On his return, the vehicle ignited while he tried to drive it. He was charred to death despite the locals attempting to pull him out after breaking the windscreen.

The initial probe revealed that the victim was trapped after the automatic locks of the car got activated due to the fire, the police said.

The Mudaliarpet police have registered a case under section 174 CrPc.
