Man arrested in murder case

The police on Tuesday arrested a 30-year-old man for allegedly murdering a 50-year-old woman in her sugarcane field at Periya Babu Samudram near Kandamangalam on Monday.

The police said the accused Arul Raj of Madukarai had murdered Thillainayagi by hitting her on the head with a spade while she was watering the crops in her field.

He stuffed the body in a gunny sack and dumped it in the field before taking the three sovereigns of gold earrings from her body.

The police said that Arul Raj recently came out on bail.

The accused, who was earlier working with the Electricity Department in Puducherry, was dismissed from service after he was accused in the murder of an elderly woman a year ago at Nettapakkam. Arul Raj was produced before a local court and remanded to custody in the Cuddalore Central Prison.
