The Chidambaram police on Thursday arrested a 29-year-old man on charges of abducting a minor girl and sexually assaulting her.

The police said Selvakumar, of Vriddhachalam, abducted the girl from Chidambaram on September 13. The police traced her to Chennai. They said he lured the girl on the promise of marriage.

Based on a complaint lodged by the girl’s family, the police booked a case under Sections 366 (kidnapping, abducting or inducing woman to compel her marriage) under the IPC and Sections 5 and 6 of the POCSO Act. Selvakumar was produced before a local court and remanded in judicial custody.
