A delegation of farmers from Karaikal region in the Union Territory on Wednesday submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister N. Rangasamy and urged him to declare Karaikal as drought affected.

In the memorandum, P. Rajendiran, president of the Karaikal Regional Farmers Welfare Association said Karaikal region has been facing an unprecedented drought situation due to lack of rains and delay in the arrival of water from Cauvery River.

All farmers including those who adopted direct sowing method had suffered heavy loss. Farmers had also lost the samba crop due to poor availability of water.

The Government should immediately declare Karaikal region as drought hit and provide a compensation of Rs.25,000 per acre to the affected farmers, Mr. Rajendiran said.

Repair defunct borewells

They demanded the Government to repair all defunct borewells in Karaikal on a war footing and ensure uninterrupted and free power supply for drawing water from the deep borewells maintained by the Puducherry Agro Services and Industries Corporation (PASIC).

They wanted the Government to provide 75 per cent subsidy to buy 5 HP irrigation pump sets and diesel engines to take up agricultural operations.

Former Congress MLA R. Kamalakannan who accompanied the farmers told reporters that the delegation had urged Chief Minister N. Rangasamy to take steps to get the due share of Cauvery water for Karaikal region from Tamil Nadu.

He said that farmers in Karaikal had been affected due to unprecedented drought and expressed hope that all the demands would be fulfilled within a month’s time. The Chief Minister promised to look into our demands, he said.
