‘Judges compelled to act against lawyers’

October 11, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:51 am IST - PUDUCHERRY:

Terming the recent action initiated against lawyers as an “unfortunate” one, Senior Judge of the Madras High Court Justice M. Jaichandren on Saturday said, “Judges were compelled to take such actions in order to keep the faith of judiciary high among the people of the country.”

Justice Jaichandren who is the portfolio Judge and Executive Chairman of the Union Territory of Puducherry Legal Services Authority, made the observation while inaugurating the National Lok Adalat and other programmes at the combined court complex in Puducherry.

While referring to the recent issues involving advocates of various Bar Associations, the Judge said, “It is unfortunate that we have been forced to take some action which of course we are not relishing.

“If the allegations made against the judges are baseless, without proof the faith of people in the judiciary which is the last resort of common man will be lost,” the Judge added.

Advising the lawyers to refrain from frequent court boycott and strikes, Justice Mr. Jaichandren said,

“A number of associations were going on boycott at the drop of a hat. Let us remind ourselves that as judicial officers, judges and lawyers, we are for people of the nation. When you go on boycott or strike it should be for a good cause.”

Stating that the Bar and the Bench are the two wheels of a chariot, he added, “Without one, the other can not move.”

Justice Mr. Jaichandren also said, “If there is sufficient evidence against any judicial officer of any level, we will take action. For which the Bar should help us with providing sufficient evidence.”
